allegations against rabbi roil Israel's Orthodox
community (excepts,
the full story at the link) A religious group accuses
Rabbi Mordechai Elon of sexually exploiting male
students. No police complaints have been filed, but
the case spotlights subjects some would prefer to
avoid.
But the case is rattling the foundations of Israel's
Orthodox community by casting a public focus on topics
that some would prefer to avoid: sexual harassment
by religious leaders and homosexuality among rabbis.
Under pressure from Takana, Elon agreed in 2006 to stop teaching at religious
schools and was ordered to limit his contact with young male students. He retired
and relocated from Jerusalem. But in recent weeks some Takana leaders received
information that Elon had violated that agreement, so they issued their statement.
Since then, as many as 15 young men have come forward with similar stories,
Israel's Channel 10 reported.

Erie man charged with sex assault of 6-year-old girl
An Erie man has been jailed in connection with the sexual assault of a 6-year-old
girl.
Mark A. Meucci, 33, was arraigned this morning before Erie 4th Ward District
Judge Tom Robie. He was charged with involuntary deviate sexual intercourse,
aggravated indecent assault, indecent assault, endangering the welfare of
a child and corruption of minors. He is being held at the Erie County Prison
on a $300,000 bond.

in Muslim countries.Twenty-nine percent of these child brides are regularly
beaten and molested by their husbands in Egypt; twenty six percent receive
similar abuse in Jordan.

abducted 18 years ago in South Lake Tahoe has been found [updated] A
29-year-old woman abducted from South Lake Tahoe as a child 18 years ago
has been found, and a couple has been arrested in connection with the case,
authorities said today.Jaycee
Dugard walked into the office of the Concord, Calif., Police Department
on Wednesday, about 200 miles from where she was abducted, said Lt. Les Lovell
of the El Dorado County Sheriff's Department.

The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Department said authorities received
a 911 call several years ago reporting that there were tents in the backyard
of Phillip Garrido’s home and that children lived there.
The caller said Garrido was “psychotic” and had sexual addictions.
A deputy talked to Garrido in the frontyard but never entered the home and
concluded there was no criminal activity.
Sheriff Warren Rupf apologized today. “We may have missed an opportunity
to have intervened earlier,” he said.

Former
Orem Boy Scout leader sentenced in child sex abuse case
A former Boy Scout leader from Orem was sentenced Monday to one year in jail
for multiple counts of sexual abuse.
Gary Wade Brown, 42, pleaded guilty in June to four counts of sexual abuse
of a child and sexual exploitation of a minor, second-degree felonies, and
one count of lewdness involving a child, a class A misdemeanor. Seven additional
charges were dismissed as part of a plea agreement. Brown faced one to 15 years
in prison for his crimes, but Judge Christine Johnson said Brown may benefit
from treatment as a free man during his 36 months on probation.

Kids Found Starved in Texas Hotel Bathroom
DALLAS — Three children were kept in a hotel bathroom
for about a year and were "horribly emaciated" when police found
them earlier this month, authorities said. One claimed to have been repeatedly
sexually assaulted.
The children's mother, 30-year-old Abneris Santiago, is charged with injury
to a child. Her 37-year-old live-in boyfriend, Alfred Santiago, is charged
with aggravated sexual assault and continuous sexual abuse.

abused at Catholic-run schools in Ireland, report says An Irish commission
finds that students at more than 200 schools were molested and subjected
to excessive punishment over a six-decade period while the church covered
up misdeeds.
Reporting from London -- Boys and girls in Ireland were beaten, sexually
abused and emotionally terrorized for decades in workhouse-style schools
run by the Roman Catholic Church where a "culture of silence" protected
victimizers rather than the children in their care, according to a long-awaited
report.
For more than half a century, chronic, excessive and arbitrary punishment
created "a
climate of fear" in which students at schools administered by Catholic
religious orders lived "with the daily terror of not knowing where the
next beating was coming from."

Details Abuses in Irish Reformatories Tens of thousands of Irish children
were sexually, physically and emotionally abused by nuns, priests and others
over 60 years in a network of church-run residential schools meant to care
for the poor, the vulnerable and the unwanted, according to a report released
in Dublin on Wednesday.The 2,600-page report paints
a picture of institutions run more like Dickensian orphanages than 20th-century
schools, characterized by privation and cruelty that could be both casual
and choreographed.
Mother to testify
against Jerusalem child abuse ringleader The partner of Elior Chen, a
spiritual leader who is suspected of orchestrating the worst case of systematic
child abuse in Israel's history, signed a plea bargain with Jerusalem prosecutors.
The deal obligates Chen's romantic partner to testify against Chen and other
accomplices suspected of abusing a number of children. The woman admitted
to authorities that she did not act to prevent Chen and others from abusing
his children. In her statement to prosecutors, she included incriminating
statements against Chen which are believed to significantly strengthen the
government's case and the investigation against Chen. Chen is the leader
of a group whose members are accused of abusing a number of children in Jerusalem.
It was later revealed that the alleged victims include the children of one
of the members of the group. At this point, Chen fled to Canada together
with his family.
N.Y. to battle
sexual abuse among ultra-Orthodox Jews A team of New York prosecutors,
counselors and religious leaders will work to combat sexual abuse in Brooklyn's
ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. The centerpiece of the outreach program,
which was announced Wednesday by
District Attorney Charles Hynes and leaders from community-based organizations
that serve Jewish communities, is a hot line abuse victims can call and speak
to a culturally sensitive social worker.The establishment of the team, which
will focus on child sex abuse, comes partly in response to a discussion on State
Assemblyman Dov Hikind's radio show in the summer of 2008.
U.S. rabbi gets 30
years for molesting his daughter Monsey rabbi Israel Weingarten was found
guilty in March of abusing his daughter throughout much of her childhood. The
trial was traumatic for his victim, now 27. Weingarten acted as his own attorney
and put his daughter through a grueling cross examination.
