Disabled pregnant woman used as target practice ALTON, Illinois (AP) -- Banished to the basement, the 29-year-old mother with a childlike mind and another baby on the way had little more than a thin rug and a mattress to call her own on the chilly concrete floor. Dorothy Dixon ate what she could forage from the refrigerator upstairs, where housemates used her for target practice with BBs, burned her with a glue gun and doused her with scalding liquid that peeled away her skin.They torched what few clothes she had, so she walked around naked. They often pummeled her with an aluminum bat or metal handle.Dixon -- six months pregnant -- died after weeks of abuse. Police have charged two adults, three teenagers and a 12-year-old boy with murder in the case that has repulsed many in this Mississippi River town. 3/22/08

Dad gets 20-plus years in prison in tot's killing PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) -- A man who killed his 17-month-old daughter in a rage over a broken Xbox was sentenced to more than two decades in prison. Prosecutors said Tyrone Spellman, 27, killed Alayiah Turman in September 2006 with at least five blows to the head when she pulled down his Xbox console. Dad accused of forcing girl to kill pet cat MUNCIE, Indiana (AP) -- A man was jailed Thursday on charges that he forced his 7-year-old daughter to kill the family cat by holding a knife in her hand and making her stab the pet.Danield J. Collins, 39, told his children during a visit to his home Sunday that he wanted them to "learn how to kill" and gave his 11-year-old son a knife to do it, according to an affidavit filed in the case.The boy tried to save the cat by hiding it under a sofa bed and putting ketchup on a knife when Collins went to the bathroom. But when the father realized that the cat was not dead, he forced his daughter to hold the knife and then held her hand tightly as he drove the knife into the animal, Muncie police Detective Jami Brown said. 3/15/08

BOGALUSA, La. —  A mother whose 6-week-old baby died after being burned, beaten and drugged says she thinks the motive was revenge, a Bogalusa newspaper reports.The child's mother, Lindsey Daigle, 19, told The Daily News she believes Amy Leighanne Thomas, 22, harmed the baby after finding out that Daigle had tattled on Thomas for taking something from a co-worker's locker. 3/8/08

Acid poured on slain soldiers TACOMA, Wash. - A Fort Lewis soldier killed a married couple — both fellow soldiers — and poured acid on their bodies in an attempt to dispose of them, a prosecutor said Monday.Spc. Ivette Gonzalez Davila also is accused of taking the couple's 6-month-old girl. KIRKWOOD, Mo. - A gunman with a history of acrimony against city leaders stormed a council meeting Thursday night, killing two police officers and three other people before law enforcers fatally shot him, authorities said. The man's gunfire injured the mayor, a newspaper reported.
