There are many groups or cliques here on the web.There are the academic groups, the jock groups, the family-oriented groups, the administrators-in-training group or administrators-in-aspiration group. There are the laid back groups and the dedicated groups and the "group" groups.
However, there are few if any individuals! To be an individual is to have sufficient self-esteem to exert a balancing influence on the extremes that often, when unchecked, cause groups to justify behavior that would be morally reprehensible if the same behavior were forthcoming from an individual.
The "purpose" of belonging to any group is to bring out and enhance (or at
least maintain) the self-esteem that comes from within you. When belonging to
a clique defines you as a person then
there is only group ego. "Individuals" who have little self-esteem are vulnerable to group criticism and may take criticism of a group or what a group stands for as if the criticism was meant personally.
When you identify closely to the group you are a member of, where is there
any room left to reach the real you? When the special person you are is
submerged in the "clique", at what cost do you "protect" your specialness by
concealing or suspending your unique humanity and warmth by hiding the jewel
deep in a "vault".
Believe me, I know it is hard to be
special and unique here on the web.
