Too much of the time we heard a "senior' asking, "are we having fun yet?" clearly they aren't for so many reasons!
Because of the 'baby boom' era, we have more seniors in America then at any other time, the demographics show us
this trend, and they are wondering 'what to do with us"? Most of us have grown up in a foreign time, a time for many
that was before television, let alone computers and cell phones and MP3's, etc. I think we have adjusted quite well,
excuse me and even have nerdy seniors who are very computer literate and even experts! We were born into a world
just finished up a war and then recuperating, trying to get the nation back on its feet, to bring once more a 'promise',
a promise of hope, of a bright future, a world without war, as all hoped this would be the war to end all wars.
In my time, we all did believe that, in America, if you applied yourself, studied hard, worked and learned, that yes,
even you could become president! At least that was my feelings, but looking back, I could see that there was still an
un-equality for women, for blacks and for other cultures that was hidden. Many who were not living in the south
did not know that the slave had not been really freed, that blacks were still not respected nor treated well. there
is always the illusion that is perpetrated that manipulates us and lulls us into a false sense of well-being in the world.
Nevertheless, we seniors, of all cultures and races come to a time of facing our futures that age has finally caught up with
us, now what do we do? Some of us, the lucky ones, are in good health, did make enough money to be able to plan
for the future, and are able to travel, visit with friends, enjoy other cultures and see or do what was hoped for.
Then, there are the others, through either their own lack of understanding, or unfortunate circumstances have become
unhealthy, poor, homeless, alone and mentally challenged. It seems, that there are more seniors with that scenerio
then the former and would just like to live their remaining years out in fairly good health, with shelter and food, and
maybe a companion.
I hope these articles, links and tidbits will be able to help seniors in some way to take back some control of their lives
and some hope for the future.
