Did you know that you may have a potential time bomb in your mouth? How many silver fillings do you have? Common "silver fillings" (silver amalgams) in your teeth contain approximately 50% mercury and only about 20% silver (with smaller amounts of copper, tin, and zinc). But mercury is a toxic poison. So what is it doing in your mouth?

Mercury Vapor Escapes From Fillings
The American Dental Association quiets the fears of concerned patients and dentists claiming that when mercury is combined with other metals used in dental amalgam, its toxic properties are made harmless. However, scientific research spanning many authors and several countries identifies the ability of mercury to slowly leach out of the tooth {even in its combined state) and into your body systems. Mercury vapor detectors placed inside your mouth show that mercury vapor escapes from your dental fillings - and into your sinus, brain, eyes, ears, heart, nervous system, and other body organs.

80 Times Above Safety limits
The average amount of mercury vapor in a mouth is 80 times above the established safety limits for mercury vapor exposure, according to our U.S. Government standards. Every time you drink liquids {especially hot drinks) or chew food, minute but dangerous amounts of mercury are being mercilessly released. Because mercury is cumulative in the body, the effects of this mercury tissue build-up, for some, will be irreversible.

Silver Fillings: Tiny Toxic Batteries
Silver fillings are small batteries. Mercury, silver, copper, tin, and zinc generate electrical currents when bathed in fluid - your saliva. The chemical reactions which generate electricity produces mercury vapor as a by-product. Fillings five years old have been shown to contain 28% mercury - which means that half the mercury has been released into your body. Unfortunately, the body cells retain much of the mercury.
When gold crowns are removed, your dentist may often find that silver fillings have been left as a "base" to seat the crown. In this case, the silver filling is not visible to the eye when you look inside the mouth (being covered with the gold crown), but they are nonetheless a mercury-leaching source, as well as an electrical battery, interfering with your body's own electrical messages. To make matters worse, scientific research shows that certain bacteria in the mouth and intestines convert mercury into methyl mercury, a substance 100 times more poisonous than ordinary mercury (already a toxic poison!). The older the silver fillings, the more methyl mercury can be formed by the bacteria in your body.

Silver Fillings: Banned In Other Countries
Because of the world-wide research of notable researchers such as Dr. Patrick Stortebecker (Sweden) and Dr. Murray Vimy (Canada), various types of silver fillings are now banned in many countries, such as Sweden, Germany, and Japan. The highly acclaimed dental school in Switzerland recently has eliminated the teaching of silver filling placement to its dental students. As more research ensues, the conclusion is being reached worldwide: indeed, teeth filled with silver amalgams are a toxic waste site, hazardous to your health!

Mercury And Pregnancy
If a female is pregnant, the baby protects the mother from mercury at the expense of itself. The concentration of mercury in the blood of the newborn is an average of 28% higher than the mother's blood. Where did the newborn get the mercury? From the mother. Research shows that mercury freely passes the placental barrier and can cause physical and mental birth defects in the newborn. Many future mothers have opted to get the mercury out of their mouths with a minimum one or two year detox afterwards before becoming pregnant to avoid exposure to their babies. If you are already pregnant, many researchers advise the mother not to have dental work done unless absolutely necessary, to avoid exposure to the unborn fetus.

Reactions To Silver Fillings
Reactions to mercury in silver-mercury fillings have been categorized into 5 divisions:

1. Neurological
a) emotional (such as depression, feeling irritable, suicidal, no tolerance)
b) motor (such as seizures, muscle twitches and spasms, multiple sclerosis)

2. Cardiovascular (such as chest pains, altered or rapid heart beats, pounding heart)

3. Collagen diseases (such as arthritis, joint pains, bursitis, lupus, scleroderma}

4. Immune system problems (such as easily catching colds, always feeling tired, feeling run down, inability to fight off infections)

5. Allergies (such as allergies to food, environment, chemicals or universal reactors)

Do any of these symptoms sound familiar for you or any of your family members? But yet, few doctors will link them back to chronic mercury poisoning. Indeed, mercury poisoning is probably one of the most forgotten diagnoses.

What Can You Do?
Become informed! Two very good books are, The Toxic Time Bomb, by Sam Ziff and Are Your Denta! Fillings Poisoning You? by Dr. Guy Fasciana, D.M.D. Ask for these through your local book store. Check the references at the end of this article for further book titles. Educate yourself thoroughly about mercury's devastation from silver fillings.

Two excellent videos detail the story of mercury and its trail of misery for those with silver fillings: a special video from the TV. program "60 Minutes" entitled "Is There Poison In Your Mouth?" (about 20 minutes), and also the well-documented BBC video from England on mercury fillings (it runs about 45 minutes).

Careful Removal
When you decide to have your fillings removed, do not take it lightly. Careful procedure must be followed when removing fillings. Since drilling mercury out of the teeth unavoidably causes a short-term high exposure to mercury vapor mists which can further invade your system, many precautions are advisable. Biological dentists, dentists who have been trained in careful mercury removal, advise several important precautions when taking out mercury.

Recommended Precautions
1. Ask for a rubber dam, a protective latex sheath placed over the tooth, to be used while the silver-mercury filling is being drilled out. This helps to avoid breathing or swallowing mercury vapor or fragments while mercury is being removed.

2. Check to make sure the dentist uses a high speed suction device to help whisk away mercury vapor (out of the nasal passages) as the dentist drills out the silver-mercury fillings.

3. Ask the dentist to use low speed drills (rather than the customary high-speed drills). Research has shown that slow speed drills help to prevent tooth cracks (especially on teeth weakened from the poisonous mercury). They also protect against unnecessary loss of tooth mass.

4. Ask for a nasal oxygen mask to help avoid breathing mercury vapor as much as possible during the drilling process.

5. Mandatory: have an IV (intravenous) vitamin C drip within one to two hours after removal of the silver-mercury fillings.

Many researchers have found that the I.V. vitamin C drips are indispensable because they help to immediately chelate out stray mercury that has been released into the body during the removal process. In addition, the vitamin C acts as an immune system enhancer.

Some people try to save themselves the expense of the I.V. vitamin C drip by taking vitamin C capsules instead. Oral vitamin C, although recommended, cannot achieve high enough tissue levels to bind the mercury just released. No matter what careful precautions are taken, a certain amount of mercury exposure is unavoidable during the removal procedure.

Vitamin C Drip
Immediately after the removal of silver-mercury fillings, we recommend a vitamin C drip (available through medical offices only). An I.V. vitamin C drip is a simple and pleasant procedure. A small catheter is introduced into your vein (usually near the elbow), taped in place, and you may pleasantly rest or read for one to two hours as the vitamin C solution gradually permeates your body, binding toxins and heavy metals. Many people report an increased feeling of well-being after a vitamin C drip.

Because mercury is so toxic, we do not consider the vitamin C drip optional after removing silver-mercury amalgams. We have seen too many cases where proper procedure was not followed with disastrous results (i.e. many unnecessary, prolonged, painful symptoms). Where proper procedure was followed, we have seen smooth sailing and minimal discomfort. In some cases, vitamin C drips are recommended more often than just the day of silver filling removal.

Acupuncture Helps Detox
Acupuncture can be invaluable when undergoing mercury detox. Discovered over 5,000 years ago, the acupuncture meridians are a network of small, powerful nerve and electromagnetic channels or little freeways which travel throughout the human body. The acupuncture points are like doorways in the channels. They can be used powerfully to open up blockages which have occurred in the body's organ and gland systems due to mercury poisoning or other toxins.

In addition, acupuncture is world famous for eliminating pain, often experienced with mercury toxicity. Acupuncture is also known to stimulate the release of endorphins. These are powerful, naturally occurring chemicals which help the body heal much faster than normally.

"Biological" Dentists
We advise working with a well trained "biological" dentist only. A biological dentist is a dentist who has been trained in careful silver-mercury amalgam removal procedures, as well as in choosing dental! materials which are compatible with your body. We have had the misfortune of hearing numerous horror stories where untrained, but well-meaning family dentists removed silver fillings without proper precautions for the patient or even themselves. Worse yet, our patients told us that they were chastised for wanting to remove these "harmless" silver fillings.

Most dental materials are used based on how long they last in your mouth, how durable they are and/or how esthetic they look, but often with little thought about whether the body's owner may be negatively reacting to the dental material itself.

Whatever is inserted inside the mouth, you will be exposed to 24 hours a day - that's a lot of hours to react if the material is not bio-compatible to your neurological system. As more and more people suffer debilitating symptoms (which may occur anywhere in the body) from the use of toxic dental materials, their first-line concern will become the use of bio-compatible dental materials. Pain is a great motivator.

Avoid Non-Precious Metals In Your Mouth
In addition to the systemic body damage and toxicity from the mercury leaching from silver fillings, many non-precious metals used in dentistry (such as palladium, stainless steel, nickel alloys, bases for porcelain crowns, etc.) have also been shown to cause systemic damage and toxicity. Look in your mouth to see if you have a white porcelain crown with a small metallic looking band at the bottom of the tooth. If so, it may be a porcelain crown over a stainless steel metal base.

Current research has connected voluminous body symptoms with allergic reactions to dental materials. Stainless steel, which is partially made of nickel, is commonly used as a base metal for porcelain crowns. Nickel has been shown to be highly carcinogenic. Palladium, used as an alloy in some gold crowns for hardness, can often produce allergic reactions. We recommend the removal of all metals or materials in teeth which are harmful or allergy-provoking. The type of restorative dental materials that will be used once your silver-mercury fillings are taken out is of the utmost importance. Don't trade one poison for another.

Composite, Tooth-Colored Fillings: Buyer Beware!
After silver fillings have been removed, many people choose to replace them with tooth-colored or plastic-like fillings called composites. Composites may appear attractive because they are usually less expensive than gold or porcelain restorations. Composites vary widely in their compositions and may be cured inside or outside the mouth. Several popular types are Heliomolar, Herculite, and Conquest. After testing hundreds of people with various types of composite restorations, we do NOT recommend their use. Although some individuals can initially tolerate these acrylic (petrochemical) type fillings (for days or months), most become intolerant later on. We have found this to be the rule, rather than the exception. The human body does not prefer petrochemically based materials in its environment or mouth. With constant exposure in the mouth, the body may be able to tolerate composites for short periods of time, but long term problems are common.

We find that after placement of composites in the mouth, the patient does not typically complain of symptoms in the tooth or mouth area. Due to the chemical composition of composite fillings, they tend to block and stagnate the body's natural electromagnetic flow at the site of the filled tooth. This blockage results in a pathological (disease-producing) reflex to a distant body site.

For example, the science of acupuncture has demonstrated that the back molar teeth correspond energetically to the lung meridian. Therefore, a composite-filled molar tooth may block the lung meridian. The patient may later develop lung deficiency symptoms from this blocked tooth, such as beginning to feel tired frequently or starting to catch colds and flus easily.

"Leaky" Composites
We often found that composite fillings badly "leak," allowing seepage of foreign particles {food, etc.) to slowly erode and decay the tooth. Composite fillings are often "technique sensitive," which means that even with the dentist's careful placement, complete bonding of the composite to the tooth structure may be woefuily inadequate. This sets the stage for leaking and further tooth loss. Amazingly, the patient may often be unaware that this leakage is happening, even though it slowly decays the tooth. By the time pain signals the patient that something is wrong (such as a sensitive tooth), it is often too late. The tooth has often decayed into the pulp chamber, necessitating a root canal or removal of the tooth.

We often see that after only two to three years after a composite filling has been placed, the composite tooth filling needs to be replaced again due to leakage or decay (usually entailing further loss of tooth structure to refill and rebond). Although the patient may be attracted by the lower cost of initially placing composite fillings, the price will ultimately be much higher, with the need to replace the composites within a few years as well as the risk of further tooth structure loss or even whole tooth loss. For these reasons, many biologically-minded dentists refuse to place composites, knowing of their potential harm.

Degussa Porcelain: The Answer
The composition of different brands of porcelain varies widely. Most porcelains contain aluminum silicate metals to lend strength to their composition. These metals typically do not degrade in the mouth, but do present a galvanic response which can disturb the body's normal electromagnetic signaling system, vital to the intercoordination of the body's complex systems. Certain porcelains are even radioactive (which are highly toxic, but still legal for a dentist to use in your mouth!).

We have seen outstanding success with Degussa Porcelain, a special brand of porcelain, used as a long-term, bio-compatible dental restoration material. It can be used as fillings (such as inlays, onlays) or crowns (covering the whole tooth). Degussa porcelain is not a true porcelain, since it does not contain the typical composition of most porcelains.

After testing hundreds of patients, we have found that almost without exception, Degussa porcelain has been tolerated very well. None developed allergic or blocking responses either initially or at a later time. This porcelain typically lasts for many years, often the lifetime of the patient. It even has a "self-healing" ability to remold itself to its own material should a small stress crack occur.
