Foreward 

All the cases presented in this book are true and authentic cases presented to me and cured by the homeopathic remedy(s) and other natural modalities.  The names of the animals and pet owners have been changed and any similarities to actual cases are purely coincidental.  The human cases are fabrications based on the Materia Medica.

You will notice that many cases are treated with single remedies and others with homeopathic complexes and in some cases, both methods were used.  Classical homeopathy is the use of one remedy after taking the case and hopefully finding the three rare, strange and peculiar symptoms to select the best remedy.  In many cases, only one symptom was used and then a study of the repertory and material medica was used to determine the best remedy.  Not all cases were solved with the first prescription, but many of the examples were solved with the first selection. 

Chapter 1

Chet and his brother Billy Bob had to work fast.  Dark clouds were forming and threatening rain and if they were to get the load of flattened cars fastened securely on that old truck, they would have to work fast.  Chet looked at the smooth tires on the back of the flatbed and hoped they would last for one more load.  With this load they now had the money to buy new tires and it couldn’t come too soon. 

Reba had just finished her karate class when she saw her mother enter the building with a large umbrella as a loud clap of thunder sounded just after lightning struck a transformer across the street and all the lights went out.  Well, I guess that’s par for the course since we live in the lightning capital of the country.  I knew what mom was talking about because Florida had more lightning strikes than any other state and we were reminded of that each and every year since we had been living here for over 10 years. The emergency lights went on and although the transformer was putting on a 4th of July display, the car was parked well away from the struck pole, so they hurriedly exited the building and bolted for the car. Once in the car Reba was showered with kisses from Taylor, a young energetic Golden Retriever who adored her.  Taylor was almost 3 and a very energetic and smart dog, smart enough to win several blue ribbons in agility classes at dog shows with Reba as his handler.  They had paired up just after her uncle had called and offered them a pup from a prize litter and now they were inseparable.  Since her uncle was a holistic vet and his wife a dog trainer, they had spent much time not only visiting but also training.  The training was for both of them as this was the first show dog that Reba had owned and trained.

This was Reba’s third year of karate and she was excited about taking the test for her black belt which was to be given in two weeks.  However, she was also apprehensive about this test because it was the third time she was scheduled to take it and although she did well in practice and knew all the martial art moves, she still lacked confidence when she took the test.  Once inside the car Reba reached for an orange and started sucking the juice out of a hole in one end. Her mother offered Reba a bottle of water, but she refused because the bottle felt too cold and cold water hurt her teeth.  Oranges and bananas were her favorite fruit, in fact they were the only fruit she would eat. The drive home was a short one and this pleased Reba as she was prone to motion sickness and never knew when an attack would start.  She started to talk and it happened again.  Her brother, Todd, noticed the look on Reba’s face and yelled, “It’s happening again”.  Reba couldn’t talk as her mouth was involuntarily open and she had no control of her face and all she could do was to get out of her seat belt and touch her mothers shoulder to let her know it had happened again.  Reba had been to doctors’ several times already, but they had no idea what was happening or what to do for her. Reba’s mother looked momentarily at her daughter and then back to the road as the rain was coming down in sheets and visibility was severely limited.  She was looking for a place to pull over so as to turn around and head to the emergency room when she heard a boom and a truck hauling flattened junk cars came out of nowhere and slammed directly into the driver’s side instantly killing Reba’s mother, Todd and Taylor.  The boom was the chain snapping that was holding the load of junk cars and the driver lost control when the load shifted and the bald tires slipped on the rain slickened road. 

Chapter 2 

Reba awoke in the hospital. Where am I was her first question? A nurse tried to pick up her wrist and start taking her pulse but before she even touched Reba she pulled back violently.  Don’t touch me she shouted and withdrew her arm quickly. The nurse had years of experience in the ER so she allowed Reba time to soak in the atmosphere and then she told her she was in a hospital and had been in a car wreck.  Mom, she cried.  Where is Mom?  Your father has been called said the nurse.  Dad’s in Europe and won’t be back till next week.  What day is it?  How long have I been out?  Answer me she wailed.  I want my Mom. Then ouch she screamed.  I’m hurt. I need my arnica.  What are you talking about said the nurse?  I need my arnica, Reba shouted.  Don’t you know anything?  Mom always gives me arnica when I’m hurt and it works better than your pain pills and where is Mom.  A silver haired doctor entered and with a grandfatherly air, talked to Reba and suggested she take a sedative so that she could get some rest.  Reba trusted the doctor and was soon fast asleep.

Reba was the only survivor of the car. Both her Mom and Todd died in the crash as did Taylor.  It  would be 24 hours before she knew the awful truth.  Her father had been notified and was returning from Europe immediately.

When Reba awakened from he sedated sleep, her father was waiting by her bedside.  How long have I been asleep?  Where is Mom?  How is Taylor?  Answer my questions, Dad,  please.  Her father took her in his arms and told her that her Mom, Todd and Taylor had not survived the crash.  Reba started wailing and had to be sedated again to calm her.

In the middle of the night, Reba awoke and cried and cried and cried, but by morning she seemed  to be okay, but rather distant.  She couldn’t concentrate anymore on her karate or school and would often times find herself awaking as if in a trance. Although she outwardly showed no emotion about her mothers death, inwardly she couldn’t feel anything.  Her first recollection was that this was just a bad dream and she would be waking up shortly and Mom and Taylor would be there.  They were such an important part of her world and she just wouldn’t  admit that anything had changed.  Over the next few months Reba internalized all things and walked around in a trance and even when she went to school, concentration on her subjects was impossible.  She dropped out of karate and spent more and more time in her room just listening to her music and thinking of her Mom.  Taylor occupied her thoughts also, and when she saw kids playing with other dogs or saw a dog that looked like Taylor, she would stifle back tears and run away.  Her father was so worried about her, that he initiated counseling classes for her, but after 3 months, Reba begged him to let her stop going to the classes. 

Reba’s father sat her down one day and tried to talk to her.  She was now being quite rebellious and he just didn’t know what to say.  It seemed that anything he said provoked her to such a state, he didn’t know if he should argue with her or just be silent and let her vent.

Just when Reba’s father was about to give up, Reba stopped her outbursts and became very passive and quiet and introverted.  Knowing that Reba was now entering the 4th stage of  grieving, (denial being the first, anger the second, bargaining being the 3rd-which Reba seemingly skipped over) he was hoping that the 5th stage which was acceptance would be forthcoming.  Acceptance never came. Three months after entering the depression or 4th stage, Reba had not moved into the last stage of grief.  She seemed to be locked into the last stage and no amount of counseling, coercion, threatening or bribing seemed to have an effect.

Reba’s uncle-her mother’s brother-Andy and her aunt Dee had been in contact weekly and were very concerned about the state of their favorite niece.  Since Reba wasn’t making any progress at home, they offered to take Reba for the summer, hoping that a change of scenery and all the activity of the farm, kennel and stable would give Reba something in which to become interested.  Reba’s Dad, who now had to spend more time with his business-since he had spent so much time with Reba-felt that this would be a good move, not only for Reba, because she really loved Aunt Dee and Uncle Andy, but this would also give him a chance to catch up on some much needed trips to secure his faltering business. 

The stages are:

1. Denial: The initial stage: "It can't be happening."
2. Anger: "Why me? It's not fair."
3. Bargaining: "Just let me live to see my children graduate."
4. Depression: "I'm so sad, why bother with anything?"
5. Acceptance: "It's going to be OK."
