AccutaneGeneric Name:
Isotretinoin Brand Names:
Accutane, Amnesteem, Sotret, Claravis Drug Description: Accutane is a medication primarily prescribed for the treatment of severe acne. Though first created as a brain cancer and pancreatic cancer chemotherapy drug, it was found to have the added benefit of eliminating tough-to-treat cases of acne, specifically those likely to leave permanent and disfiguring scarring. Classified as a retinoid, this drug is related to vitamin A, a substance found naturally in the body. However, on June 29, 2009, Roche Pharmaceuticals pulled the drug from the market due to numerous personal injury lawsuits and business costs. Isotretinoin will still be available in generic form and under different brand names in the United States for the treatment of acne and other conditions. Conditions Treated:
Accutane is primarily prescribed for the treatment and management of acne. Since there are high risks of side effects, this is often not the first course of treatment explored and topical cleansers and creams will likely be utilized first.
