Guilty
after six-year trial, Portugal's high-society
paedophile ring To most people Portugal's
state-run orphanages seemed like a safe haven
for thousands of children who had been robbed
of their parents. They were called the Casa
Pia, or Houses of the Pious.
But for an elite paedophile ring, which included
a former ambassador and a prominent television
celebrity, Casa Pia orphanages were something
entirely different. They were supermarkets
stocked with children to abuse. Yesterday,
at the conclusion of the longest trial in Portugal's
history, seven defendants were convicted of
using the orphanages to rape and abuse scores
of teenage boys in a case that has sent shockwaves
through the country's political elite and raised
serious concerns over the efficiency of Portugal's
judiciary. Six of the seven were given jail
terms of between five and 18 years.
The trial, in Lisbon's top criminal court,
is thought to be the largest ever undertaken
by Portugal's court system. Over five and half
years, more than 800 witnesses, including 32
alleged victims, gave evidence detailing how
a paedophile ring used the orphanages to source
children for wealthy and influential clients.
The sentencing document alone, of which judges
spent most of yesterday reading a summary,
runs to 2,000 pages.

declined to investigate hundreds of purchases
of child pornography A 2006 Immigration and
Customs Enforcement investigation into the purchase
of child pornography online turned up more than
250 civilian and military employees of the Defense
Department -- including some with the highest
available security clearance -- who used
credit cards or PayPal to purchase images of
children in sexual situations. But the Pentagon
investigated only a handful of the cases, Defense
Department records show.
The
cases turned up during a 2006 ICE inquiry,
called Project Flicker, which targeted overseas
processing of child-porn payments. As part
of the probe, ICE investigators gained access
to the names and credit card information of
more than 5,000 Americans who had subscribed
to websites offering images of child pornography.
Many of those individuals provided military
email addresses or physical addresses with
Army or fleet ZIP codes when they purchased
the subscriptions.....

dirty little secret Western forces fighting
in southern Afghanistan had
a problem. Too often, soldiers on patrol
passed an older man walking hand-in-hand
with a pretty young boy. Their behavior suggested
he was not the boy's father. Then, British
soldiers found that young Afghan men were
actually trying to "touch and fondle
them," military investigator AnnaMaria
Cardinalli told me. "The soldiers didn't
understand."All of this was so disconcerting
that the Defense
Department hired Cardinalli, a social
scientist, to examine this mystery. Her report, "Pashtun Sexuality," startled
not even one Afghan. But Western forces were
shocked - and repulsed.

James Carle Spencer, Accused Child Molester,
Killed By Karma After Plunging From Tree
In February, a 14-year-old Minnesota girl confessed
that 37-year-old James Carle Spencer had repeatedly
molested her. They'd had intercourse at least
10 times, she said, and Spencer had otherwise
molested her some 70 to 90 times...
Spencer later confessed to his mother and aunt
that he'd gone perv on the girl, and his aunt
reported it to the cops. He had to be admitted
to an Austin, Minnesota hospital after attempting
suicide following his confession.
He was charged with six counts of criminal
sexual assault, and was scheduled to go to
trial next week. But Spencer decided he'd rather

at Arlington National Cemetery has
been arrested on multiple charges of child
abuse and sex offenses.U.S. marshals arrested
Bobbie Garrett as he walked off
a plane in Columbus, Ohio, on July 31, according
to the Bay Net, a news source for Calvert,
St. Mary's and Charles County, Md. Garrett,
who used to live in Waldorf, Md., was wanted
by Charles County police.
The 14 charges reportedly include child abuse,
second-degree sex offenses, third-degree sex
offenses, fourth-degree sex offenses, unnatural
or perverted practices, and second-degree assault.
The report says the arrest stems from multiple
accusations made in 2007 that Garrett sexually
abused minors.

Oregon man who federal prosecutors said had the
largest collection of child pornography they
have ever found in the state has been sentenced
to 15 years in prison.Dewey Burr of Hillsboro

child pornography.The FBI said investigators
found 1.1 million images of child pornography
on his computer, including graphic images of
babies and toddlers being sexually abused.

police say (CNN) -- A 19-year-old
Kentucky woman who has been missing for more
than a week is believed to be with a registered
sex offender who has a history of kidnapping
and unlawful confinement, authorities said Tuesday.
Brittney Kustes was last seen July 17 at her
grandparents' home in Brooks, just south of
Louisville, according to Detective Scott McGaha
of the Bullitt County Sheriff's Office.

Texas man accused of starving three children and

group of Quiet Village residents who are concerned
about three sex offenders who live in a home
on Nevada Street have organized a meeting at
nearby Helman Elementary School to discuss the
issue.
The three male sex offenders living at the home
in the 300 block of West Nevada Street are in compliance
with the law and are not considered predatory offenders,
said Sgt. Warren Hensman of the Ashland Police
Department, whose beat includes the neighborhood.
Police are not aware of anything unlawful occurring
in Quiet Village because of the presence of the
three men, and Hensman said he considers the neighborhood
safe.

boy PORTLAND — A Portland multimillionaire
has pleaded guilty to sexually abusing a neighborhood
boy and has agreed to pay his victim $1.6 million
and spend about nine years in prison.
Scott Raymond Strickland pleaded guilty Tuesday
in Multnomah County Circuit Court to first-degree
sexual abuse and a related count. Judge Julie Frantz
approved the deal and gave the 56-year-old former
doctor and flight attendant about two weeks to
turn himself in.

CITY (AFP) – The Vatican moved Thursday
to fast-track "urgent" priest sex abuse
cases -- with some to be handled by the pope
himself -- but drew criticism for sidestepping
the issue of turning abusers in to the courts.
Announcing new rules in a bid to fend off accusations
of complacency, the Roman Catholic
Church said it would accelerate internal investigations
and extended by a decade the statute of limitations
in abuse cases.
The new steps provide for referring "the
most grave cases to the Roman pontiff with regard
to dismissal from the clerical state," or
defrocking a priest, in a codification of an already
existing channel of punishment.And for the first
time, a priest may be defrocked through an "extra-judicial
decree" --
effectively without a hearing.

'astonished' at Belgian police raid VATICAN
CITY – The Vatican said Friday it was astonished
and outraged that Belgian police investigating
priestly sex abuse had conducted raids that also
targeted the graves of two archbishops.The Vatican
summoned the Belgian ambassador to the Holy
See to convey its anger over the raids, which
also included the home and offices of the retired
archbishop of Belgium. The ambassador was called
in for a meeting with the Vatican's foreign minister.
In a statement, the Vatican said any sinful and
criminal abuse of minors from members of the church
must be condemned and repeated that there is a need
for justice and amends.But it added, "The
Secretariat of State also expresses astonishment
at the way in which the search took place." It
expressed "outrage over the violation of the
tombs."

welcomed by the U.S.
victims group SNAP, the Survivors Network of
those Abused by Priests, which urged police and
prosecutors across the world to use their full
powers to gain access to church records. By contrast,
the group criticized the Vatican's reaction.
"Vatican officials who criticize the Belgian
police raid of the Brussels church hierarchy should
be ashamed of themselves," Joelle Casteix
of SNAP said in a statement Friday. "While
Roman church officials talk about stopping abuse,
Belgian police officials take action to stop abuse."

A 13-year-old Yemeni girl who was forced
into marriage died five days after her wedding
when she suffered a rupture in her sex organs
and hemorrhaging, a local rights organisation
said today.
Ilham Mahdi al Assi died last Friday in a hospital
in Yemen's Hajja province, the Shaqaeq Arab Forum
for Human Rights said, quoting a medical report.
Her death was a "flagrant example" of

females", it said. The marriage of young girls

priest accused of molestation, letter shows Pope

The troop leader, Timur Dykes, had already admitted
to a Scout official that he had molested 17 boys.
Still parents were not notified and Dykes continued
to work with the Scouts. In a deposition he confessed
to abusing Jack Doe No. 4. Dykes was asked what
he did that could be considered molestation.
"I handled his genitals," Dykes said.
But the former troop leader isn't on trial, reports CBS
News correspondent John Blackstone. The
case is against the Boy Scouts, who kept confidential
files on Dykes and on thousands of molesters, intended
to keep them out of scouting but keep
the incidents quiet.
"They wanted to just get the guy to go away," said Patrick Boyle,
an investigative journalist. "And let's hope he doesn’t show up
again. So that means very frequently, nobody told the police."
Now the secrecy is being lifted in an Oregon courtroom.

FRANCIS, Wis. – Arthur Budzinski says the first
time the priest molested him, he was 12 years old,
alone and away from home at a school for the deaf.
He says he asked the Rev. Lawrence Murphy to hear
his confession, and instead the priest took him into
a closet under the stairs and sexually assaulted
him.
Budzinski, now 61, was one of about 200 deaf boys
at the St. John's School for the Deaf just outside Milwaukee who
say they were molested by the priest decades ago
in a case now creating a scandal for the Vatican and
threatening to ensnare Pope
Benedict XVI.
Some of the allegations became public years ago.
But they got renewed attention this week after documents
obtained by The New York
Times showed that Murphy was spared a defrocking
in the mid-1990s because he was protected by the

Pope Benedict XVI apologized Saturday to victims of
priestly abuse in Ireland, acknowledging that the scandal
had brought the church into disrepute but offering
no specific action to punish clergy accused of involvement
even as the crisis spread across Europe.
"You have suffered grievously and I am truly sorry.
I know that nothing can undo the wrong you have endured," the
pope wrote to Irish victims and their families. "I
openly express the shame and remorse that we all feel."
Amid charges of coverups, he acknowledged that church leaders had made "grave
errors of judgment" in how they dealt with the problem of sexual abuse,
and he called on offending priests and religious workers to submit "to
the demands of justice."
An
inquiry is vital, but the church's moral authority
is lost for ever There is only one conceivable
reaction to the fast-spreading
crisis in the Catholic church: horror. Only the
most virulent anti-papist could ever have quite envisaged
the scale of child abuse and the doggedness of the
church's desire to stifle scandal. The rest of us are
astonished and appalled. Quite rightly, Angela Merkel saw
fit to intervene. After decades – perhaps
we should rather be referring to centuries – of
obfuscation, the Catholic church has to be called to
account for what has happened. Since abuse allegations
first emerged in the early 90s in the UK and Ireland,
the denials, both those of officials and those which
ordinary Catholics told themselves, have shifted several
times. Initially the church authorities declared it
was just a few bad apples, but last summer the Ryan
report exposed decades of systematic abuse of thousands
of children in Ireland. Another line of defence was
that it was a particular Anglophone problem with roots
in Ireland's excessively deferential Catholic culture,
which had then been exported to the US and Australia....the

of crime & reaction
UK, March 15, 2010 (Pal Telegraph; commentary by
Peter Eyre) -In Part 1 of this series we covered
the general overview of the Hollie Greig story as
told by Robert Green. We will now continue by explaining
the initial notification to the Grampian Police and
to other authorities and events that followed after
this initial response.
It was back in 2000 that Hollie's mum had been beaten
by her husband and she decided to leave him and went
to a hostel with Hollie. It was whilst they were
alone together in the hostel that Hollie told her
mum that they had to go and get the dogs. Anne said
not to worry we will get the dogs but Hollie insisted
that they go otherwise he will kill her two pet dogs.
Anne then started to question Hollie on this issue
and the story of abuse slowly came out. Apparently
her father used this tool as a leverage for him to
carry out his activities.....he had also told Hollie
that he would also kill her mum. Hollie by this time
was 20 years old.
The next day Hollie's Carer came around and so Anne
decided to discuss this with her. Anne was shocked
with her response to the story.....it later came
out that the Carer was part of the ring of peodophiles.....the

to the papacy. But in the past week, the Catholic Church
in the country has faced a barrage of criticism from
politicians and the media as well as from the faithful — and
much of the ire is focused on the German who is now
Supreme Pontiff in Rome. On Monday, the daily Süddeutsche
Zeitung splashed the headline "Benedict
XVI Remains Silent" on a front-page story describing
how the Pope declined to comment on the growing priestly
sexual-abuse scandal in his native Germany during
public prayers in the Vatican on Sunday. "The
abuse scandal has been a nightmare," Alois Glück,
president of Germany's lay organization, the Central
Committee of German Catholics, tells TIME. "It's
one of the worst crises that we've seen in the Catholic
Church here in Germany."

Abortion Outrages Brazil's Catholic Church The
case of the pregnant 9-year-old was shocking enough.
But it was the response of the Catholic Church that
infuriated many Brazilians. Archibishop Jose Cardoso
Sobrinho of the coastal city of Recife announced that
the Vatican was excommunicating the family of a local
girl who had been raped and impregnated with twins
by her stepfather, because they had chosen to have
the girl undergo an abortion. The Church excommunicated
the doctors who performed the procedure as well. "God's laws," said the archbishop,
dictate that abortion is a sin and that transgressors
are no longer welcome in the Roman Catholic Church. "They
took the life of an innocent," Sobrinho told
TIME in a telephone interview. "Abortion is
much more serious than killing an adult. An adult
may or may not be an innocent, but an unborn child
is most definitely innocent. Taking that life cannot
be ignored."

father who repeatedly raped his two daughters and
made them pregnant 18 times during a tyrannical
35-year campaign of physical and sexual abuse escaped
detection because of a litany of failings by care
professionals, a report revealed yesterday.
Agencies involved with the family failed to confront
the man even though they strongly suspected for many
years that he was the father of the girls’ seven
babies, some of them born with severe genetic defects.
An independent review of the case, whose summary
was published yesterday, disclosed that more than
100 care professionals from 28 agencies were involved
with the family in Sheffield and Lincolnshire from
1973 to 2008. ...and he gets only 14 and a half years....after
ruining the lives of these children and the fathered
ones..!!! He deserves the death penalty!..so much
for helping the children...child protective services!

County Jail inmate is charged with trying to hire
a hit man to kill two children he's accused of
molesting and their parents.
Cook County Sheriff
Tom Dart says 32-year-old Edward Floyd faces six
counts of solicitation to commit murder.
He's been ordered
held without bond on the new charges. He's been in
custody since a September 2008 arrest for two counts
of criminal sexual assault of a child.

Rape as "Sex Education"

This is a report on a bit of
local behavioral engineering in a local middle school
here in Texas that sparked parent reaction last week.
The school in the county between south Houston and
Galveston, mostly white blue collar.
A middle aged black female school board trustee was
scheduled to give a 'motivational talk' to 6th-8th
grade girls, ages 11-14, who were excused from classes
to go to the assembly hall. The speaker, Shirley
Price, told the school principal to leave the hall,
which he did.
Then the woman proceeded with a graphic speech
about how to avoid pregnancy by having oral sex. Two
girls presented a 'sketch' (skit) with an undisclosed
demonstration, at the end of which Price kissed one
of the girls on the cheek before the whole assembly.
Before dismissing the students Price told them
not to tell their parents about the speech.
But many girls did tell their parents.

chance encounter revived memories of molestation decades
ago Officials charged
Claude Edward Foulk after alleged victim saw him at
Napa State Hospital and contacted police. The child
molestation case against the fired head of Napa State
Hospital began with a chance meeting last September.
A man, who as a boy in the early 1970s lived a few
doors from Claude Edward Foulk in Long Beach, was visiting
the hospital as part of his job as a vendor. He turned
the corner of a hallway and made eye contact with Foulk,
who ran the 1,200-patient facility that houses mentally
ill criminals.
The encounter triggered memories of alleged abuse by
Foulk nearly four decades ago, his attorney told The
Times. The man told his wife and went to Long Beach
police, who began investigating.
On Friday, the Los Angeles County district attorney's
office filed court documents providing details about
Foulk's alleged history of molestation. Authorities
alleged that Foulk molested at least five victims but
are now looking at eight additional allegations that
date to 1965.

Charged With Molesting 103 Patients, Videotaping Sex
Acts(KTLA)
DOVER, Del. -- Prosecutors expect to add more counts
to a lengthy indictment against a Delaware pediatrician
charged with serial molestation of 103 children.
A grand jury returned a 160-page indictment Monday
against Dr. Earl Bradley of Lewes with 471 counts
of sexual crimes.
The case has shocked the close-knit coastal community
of Lewes and the central Delaware town of Milford,
where Bradley closed an office in 2005 after police
investigated him.
Bradley's attorney, Eugene Maurer, said he would
seek to move the trial out of Sussex County.
But he said the "real battleground" in
the case will be Bradley's mental state, not what
is seen on videotapes seized from Bradley's home
and office or alleged in the indictment.
Announcing the grand jury's indictment, Attorney
General Beau Biden said all of the alleged victims,
mainly girls but including one boy, were caught on
more than 13 hours of video recordings, some dating
to 1998.

case A convicted sex
offender who had traveled to Cambodia allegedly to
have sex with a minor was returned to the United
States to face trial in Los Angeles, the FBI said
Monday night.Michael James Dodd, 59, who taught English
in Cambodia, had sex with a 14-year-old girl and
was seen with her on several occasions in the Cambodian
capital of Phnom Penh, according to an affidavit
for arrest filed in federal court.

Vatican's top bioethics official on Monday dismissed
calls for his resignation following an uproar over
his defense of doctors who aborted the twin fetuses
of a 9-year-old child who was raped by her stepfather.Monsignor
Renato Fisichella told The Associated Press he refused
to respond to five members of the Vatican's Pontifical
Academy for
Life who questioned his suitability to lead the institution.
Fisichella wrote an article in the Vatican's newspaper
in March saying the Brazilian doctors didn't deserve
excommunication as mandated by church law because
they were saving the girl's life. The call for mercy
sparked heated criticism from some academy members
who said it implied the Vatican was opening up to
so-called "therapeutic abortion" to save
the mother's life.

activity, according to a report by the Trafficking
in Persons Study Commission."Ohio is not only
a destination place for foreign-born trafficking victims,
but it's also a recruitment place," said Celia
Williamson, an associate professor at the University
of Toledo who led the research.Formed last year by
Ohio Attorney General Richard Condray, the commission
also found that hundreds more in the state are at risk
of being forced into sex trafficking or to work against
their will in fields, restaurants, sweatshops or constructions
sites.Nationwide, between 45,000 and 50,000 people

a 2001 report by the U.S. State Department. But Williamson
noted that the problem is hard to quantify because
of the underground nature of human trafficking, and
studies often rely on estimates. Even the Ohio study,

is limited, she said.

are in critically short supply.

Out of curiosity to
see exactly what kind of books Kevin Jennings and
his organization think American students should be
reading in school, our team chose a handful at random
from the over 100 titles on GLSEN’s
grades 7-12 list, and began reading through.
What we discovered shocked us.
We were flabbergasted. Rendered speechless.
We were unprepared for what we encountered. Book
after book after book contained stories and anecdotes
that weren’t merely X-rated and pornographic,
but which featured explicit descriptions of sex acts
between pre-schoolers; stories that seemed to promote
and recommend child-adult sexual relationships; stories
of public masturbation, anal sex in restrooms, affairs
between students and teachers, five-year-olds playing
sex games, semen flying through the air. One memoir
even praised becoming a prostitute as a way to increase
one’s self-esteem. Above all, the books seemed
to have less to do with promoting tolerance than
with an unabashed attempt to indoctrinate students
into a hyper-sexualized worldview.
We knew that unless we carefully documented what
we were reading, the public would have a hard time
accepting it. Mere descriptions on our part could
not convey the emotional gut reaction one gets when
seeing what Kevin Jennings wants kids to read as
school assignments. So we began scanning pages from
each of the books, and then made exact transcriptions
of the relevant passages on each page.
Are we exaggerating, or misconstruing quotes that
could be interpreted a different way? No: Read the
passages below and judge for yourself. There’s
no wiggle room. The language is explicit, the intent

GM Eric Tillman stood up in a Regina
courtroom Monday and said he was "profoundly
sorry" for sexually assaulting a teenage girl
at his home. Tillman, whose trial in the case was
set to begin Monday, pleaded guilty to a single sexual
assault charge stemming from the incident involving
his children's teenaged babysitter. Tillman wiped
tears from his eyes as he apologized for what he
did to the girl, his family and the Roughrider organization.
Both Crown and defence lawyers have asked for a discharge,
but it is unclear if they are seeking an absolute

The bishop of Limerick is offering his resignation

The report has caused widespread public anger in
Ireland and more resignations are expected to follow

The two highest-ranking Catholics in Ireland,
Cardinal Sean Brady and Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid
Marti, have been summoned to the Vatican this week
to discuss the report with the pontiff. Brady has
promised to resign if it's found that any child was
abused as the result of failings on his part. The
Irish government has expressed "deep disappointment" at
the Vatican's failure to offer a detailed response
to the report.

HORRIFIC new allegations suggesting children as young
as five were ordered to murder a man have emerged in
a case already involving claims of ritualistic child
sex abuse.
Details of the so-called "Mohler case" were
first revealed last week, when authorities arrested

officer of Orange County’s Orangewood Children’s
Foundation was convicted today of stealing more
than $780,000 from the nonprofit for abused children.
Tracy Lynn Salcido, 40, pleaded guilty in Orange
County Superior Court to 206 felony counts of forgery
and 20 felony counts of falsifying records. She
was sentenced to 12 years in prison and ordered
to pay $1.15 million in restitution and legal and
accounting fees stemming from the case. Founded
in 1981, Orangewood built and supports the county’s
only emergency shelter for neglected and abused
children. (Obviously this is someone who really

Abused for His Cheating Heart Arrested A man prosecutors say was tied
up, humiliated and assaulted by his wife, two of his lovers and another woman
as payback for his cheating ways has been jailed on accusations of child
abuse and other misdeeds.
The 36-year-old Fond du Lac man was arrested on allegations that also include
theft, unlawful phone use and harassment with a death threat in a domestic
abuse investigation, Fond du Lac Police Capt. Steve Klein said Wednesday.
The AP is not naming the man to protect his identity as an alleged victim

Kids Found Starved in Texas Hotel Bathroom
DALLAS — Three children were kept in a hotel bathroom
for about a year and were "horribly emaciated" when police found
them earlier this month, authorities said. One claimed to have been repeatedly
sexually assaulted.
The children's mother, 30-year-old Abneris Santiago, is charged with injury
to a child. Her 37-year-old live-in boyfriend, Alfred Santiago, is charged
with aggravated sexual assault and continuous sexual abuse.

against Jerusalem child abuse ringleader The partner of Elior Chen, a
spiritual leader who is suspected of orchestrating the worst case of systematic
child abuse in Israel's history, signed a plea bargain with Jerusalem prosecutors.
The deal obligates Chen's romantic partner to testify against Chen and other
accomplices suspected of abusing a number of children. The woman admitted
to authorities that she did not act to prevent Chen and others from abusing
his children. In her statement to prosecutors, she included incriminating
statements against Chen which are believed to significantly strengthen the
government's case and the investigation against Chen. Chen is the leader
of a group whose members are accused of abusing a number of children in Jerusalem.
It was later revealed that the alleged victims include the children of one
of the members of the group. At this point, Chen fled to Canada together
with his family.

sexual abuse among ultra-Orthodox Jews A team of New York prosecutors,
