How Many Mexican Drug War Deaths Can We Attribute to U.S. Pot Laws?It was less than one year ago when acting U.S. DEA administrator Michelle Leonhart publicly declared that the escalating violence on the U.S./Mexico border should be viewed as a sign of the “success” of America’s drug war strategies.

Well, if the DEA’s chief talking head thought that some 6,300 drug cartel-related murders in 2008 was an indication of progress, one can only imagine that she believes that this weekend’s south-of-the-border killing spree — which included the murder of a pregnant U.S. official and members of her family — must be downright victorious.

To rest of us, however, these acts are nothing short of a senseless tragedy — a tragedy made all that much more heart-wrenching because it is U.S. policy that is helping to fuel this violence.

In India, deadly backlash against freedom of information activists New Delhi, India – When Ajay Kumar asked New Delhi authorities last fall why a local politician had authorized the construction of private houses and shops on public land, he didn’t imagine the question would land him in the hospital. The activist had inquired using India’s 2005 Right to Information (RTI) Act, which allows any citizen to ask for information from any level of government, from village leaders to the office of the prime minister. It presents a cultural sea change in India, where for more than 60 years state bureaucrats have acted more like colonial masters than servants of the people.Mr. Kumar was stonewalled by the public information officer at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, so he followed procedure and appealed to a higher-level public information office in the MCD. When he still heard nothing back, he went to the federal authorities, the Central Information Commission, which directed the MCD together with the police to jointly inspect the property.But when Kumar arrived on site in January, he was attacked by a mob of two dozen that backed the local politician.“Neither the police nor the people helped me,” says Kumar, who was beaten in the head repeatedly by an iron rod, leaving him unconscious and bleeding profusely. Kumar is now pursuing the matter in court.

After one marathon session last September, they returned home to find their real daughter dead and called police.

North Korean worker executed for passing on news A North Korean factory worker has been executed by firing squad for sneaking news out of the country on his illicit mobile phone, Seoul-based radio said today.The armaments factory worker was accused of divulging the price of rice and other information on living conditions to a friend who had defected to South Korea years ago, Open Radio for North Korea reported.The man, surnamed Chong, made calls to the defector using an illegal Chinese mobile phone, according to an unnamed North Korean security agency official cited by the report.

Haitian family survives 2 big quakes in 2 months (AP)The Desarmes family left their native Haiti two weeks after the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake, joining the eldest son in Chile for what seemed a refuge from the fear and chaos of Port-au-Prince. Their sense of security lasted barely a month. It was shattered at 3:43 a.m. Saturday when one of the most powerful quakes on record shook a swath of Chile.All the Desarmes' immediate family survived both quakes. Immigration Reform Advocates Allege Jobs Bill Will Allow Employers To Hire Illegal Aliens As the $15 billion jobs bill advanced through Congress last week, the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) said the measure included no verification mechanism to ensure that newly created jobs will be filled by legal U.S. workers. FAIR also alleges that the bill, which was authored by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), does not prevent employers from claiming tax credits and exemptions if the workers they hire are illegal aliens.


Priceless watches stolen from Israeli museum 27 years ago land L.A. woman in court When prolific Israeli burglar Na’aman Diller died of cancer in 2003, he left his widow a collection of more than 100 priceless artifacts of decidedly questionable origin.

They included rare clocks, manuscripts, paintings and an item billed as “the world’s most expensive watch”: a gold and rock crystal pocket watch made for French Queen Marie Antoinette in the 18th century.

All the items had allegedly been stolen during a storied heist at Jerusalem’s L.A. Mayer Museum of Islamic Art back in 1983. But that didn’t stop Diller’s widow, Nili Shamrat, 64, of Tarzana, from trying to sell the treasures back to the art museum no questions asked, authorities said.

Her effort to sell the booty put in motion a lengthy international investigation that ended a few weeks ago when Shamrat was sentenced to five years of probation and 300 hours of community service for receiving the property.

200 Russian tanks found abandoned in forest A news website near the city of Yekaterinburg posted a video of the forgotten tanks showing passers-by clambering inside the vehicles and playing with empty ammunition belts. The only items that seemed to be missing were live rounds and the keys to the tanks' ignitions. "There are tanks all over the forest, abandoned," an unnamed reporter on the video says. "If you need one, come and get it." Locals in a nearby village said the tanks had been sitting there for almost four months covered in snow. The armoured vehicles were identified as a mixture of T-80 and T-72 battle tanks, the workhorses of the Russian army.

It's raining fish ... no really WHILE the Top End and Central Australia have been battered by torrential rains, a Territory town has had fish falling from the sky.The freak phenomena happened not once, but twice, on Thursday and Friday afternoon about 6pm at Lajamanu, about 550km southwest of Katherine.NEWSBREAKER Christine Balmer, who took these photos of the fish on the ground and in a bucket, had to pinch herself when she was told ``hundreds and hundreds" of small white fish had fallen from the sky.

"It rained fish in Lajamanu on Thursday and Friday night," she said, "They fell from the sky everywhere.

"Locals were picking them up off the footy oval and on the ground everywhere.

Woman Sells Children For $175 And A Cockatoo (AP) NEW ORLEANS -- A Louisiana woman has pleaded guilty to selling two children for a cockatoo and $175 in what her attorney called an attempt to do a good thing that went wrong. "It was a really clumsy attempt at an adoption proceeding," said Steve Sikich, attorney for Donna Louise Greenwell of Pitkin. "She was trying to help the children and get them situated." Greenwell, 53, was sentenced Monday to 15 months of hard labor on each of two criminal counts: sale of a minor. The sentences are to run concurrently. The case centered on a 5-year-old boy and a 4-year-old girl in Greenwell's custody.

Teenage Girls Cut Unborn Baby from Colombian Mother's Womb Two teenage girls snatched another teenager's unborn baby from her womb in a crude cesarean operation, Colombian newspaper El Tiempo reported Thursday.The two unnamed girls, aged 14 and 16, assaulted Maria Amparo Rivera Girata, 18, in the small town of Duitama, northern Colombia, on Monday.According to El Tiempo, the pair held a knife to Girata's throat and tied her up, before cutting her uterus open and removing the infant.Girata, who was seven months pregnant, was later found still conscious with severe abdomen injuries.The two girls were arrested with the baby, who survived the ordeal, soon after.

Couple arrested hours after marrying Newlyweds Harry and Claire Arnold spent their wedding night in a police cell after being arrested at Durham bus station for being drunk and disorderly. The couple were married at Durham Register Office on the morning of August 10, with 40 guests, in a ceremony that had taken four years to plan.

Hazelwood man dies after 10 calls to 911 over two days In his first call to 911, Curtis Mitchell sounded calm, explaining to dispatchers that his "entire stomach [was] in pain."By the time his longtime girlfriend made a 10th call nearly 30 hours later, she was frantic. He wasn't breathing. He was cold to the touch."Oh God, oh God," Sharon Edge sobbed to dispatchers. "I've been trying to get an ambulance over here for three days."Paramedics arrived at their Hazelwood home as Ms. Edge tried to resuscitate the 50-year-old, but it was too late.Ambulances were dispatched three times on Saturday, Feb. 6, to the couple's home in the 5100 block of narrow Chaplain Way, but couldn't get there because of the snow. Paramedics twice asked whether Mr. Mitchell could walk to an intersection, even after he told them that he could not because he was in too much pain. There was complications all around......they are all working to make sure this doesn't happen again....but life does have its way at times.

Oklahoma cop pulls ambulance over; puts EMT in chokehold while patient lingers An Oklahoma State Trooper pulled over an ambulance on its way to the hospital Sunday, resulting in the police officer placing a chokehold on a paramedic as a patient lingered in the back.It was all caught on video by the patient’s son, who was following in another car.The officer was apparently upset that the ambulance did not yield for him.However, it is evident that the ambulance had a real emergency on its hands, unlike the cop, who had been speeding towards some incident he was able to resolve in minutes, enabling him to refocus his attention on the ambulance.The incident marks the second time this year that a police officer pulled a vehicle over as it was clearly on its way to a hospital for an emergency.

The state's "Subversive Activities Registration Act," passed last year and now officially on the books, states that "every member of a subversive organization, or an organization subject to foreign control, every foreign agent and every person who advocates, teaches, advises or practices the duty, necessity or propriety of controlling, conducting, seizing or overthrowing the government of the United States ... shall register with the Secretary of State." There's even a $5 filing fee. By "subversive organization," the law means "every corporation, society, association, camp, group, bund, political party, assembly, body or organization, composed of two or more persons, which directly or indirectly advocates, advises, teaches or practices the duty, necessity or propriety of controlling, conducting, seizing or overthrowing the government of the United States [or] of this State."

Girl buried alive in Turkish honour killing A 16-YEAR-OLD girl was buried alive by relatives in southeast Turkey in a gruesome honour killing just because she reportedly befriended boys, the Anatolia news agency reported today.Acting on a tip-off, police discovered Medine Memi's body in a sitting position with her hands tied, in a two-metre deep hole in a chicken pen outside her house in Kahta town, Adiyaman province, 40 days after she went missing, the agency said.A subsequent post mortem revealed that she had a significant amount of soil in her lungs and stomach, meaning that she was buried alive, forensic experts told the agency."The autopsy result is blood-curdling. According to our findings, the girl, who had no bruises on her body and no sign of narcotics or poison in her blood, was alive and fully conscious when she was buried," one anonymous expert said.

Christian Father Faces Jail for Taking Daughter to Church Joseph Reyes knew he could be accused of defying a court order barring him from taking his daughter to church. But he did it anyway and now he is facing contempt of court charges and jail.The 35 year old, holding his 3 year old in his arms, walked into Holy Name Cathedral on January 17. A news crew videotaped the act of defiance."I have been ordered by a judge not to expose my daughter to anything non-Judaism," Reyes told a news reporter. "But I am taking her to hear the teachings of perhaps the most prominent Jewish Rabbi in the history of this great planet of ours. I can't think of anything more Jewish than that."

Cocaine Found In Restricted Facility Near Shuttle NASA is investigating how cocaine ended up at one of its shuttle processing facilities.NASA told News 13 that a small amount of white powder residue was found Tuesday in a plastic bag in the Orbiter Processing Facility No. 3, just west of the Vehicle Assembly Building.The agency is also checking to make sure the shuttle is OK. The processing facility is where maintenance work is being done on shuttle Discovery ahead of its upcoming mission in March.“We do not tolerate the use of illegal substances for people who work on the orbiter,” said Kennedy Space Center Director Robert Cabana. "They said that my dad had a debt and they were going to take my pony. It made me angry," said Emma Chapelhow, who lives on a farm with her father and stepmom. Virginia Man Convicted of Indecent Exposure for Being Naked in His Own Home A Virginia man has been convicted of indecent exposure after prosecutors said he stood naked inside his house as a 7-year-old boy and his mother walked by. The mother and child allegedly observed the defendant, 29-year-old Erick Williamson, first through a doorway and again through a window that had no drapes, MyFoxDC reported.

The Plan, The Scam, The Man.  Don't ya just love it when a plan comes together?

 

The Scam Regarding the Cash for Clunkers Program

  

Just look at how the stupid Cash for Clunkers car buyers got taken to the cleaners:

If you traded in a clunker worth $3,500, you got $4,500 off for an apparent "savings" of $1,000.

However, you will have to pay taxes on this $4,500 of “income” next April 15th (something no auto dealer told you).  If you are in the 30% tax bracket, you will have to pay a whopping $1,350 on that $4,500!

So, rather than save $1,000, you’ve actually paid an extra $350 to 
the feds.  In addition, you most likely traded in a car that was already paid for.  Now you have 4 or 5 years of payments on a car that you may not have needed, and costing you more per month than the averaged fuel, maintenance and upkeep you were dealing with while driving your ‘clunker’.

But wait; it gets even worse:  You also got ripped off by the dealer.  For example, every dealer here in LA was selling the Ford Focus with all the goodies, including A/C, auto transmission, power windows, etc for $12,500 the month before the "Cash for Clunkers" program started. 
 

Then, when the "Cash for Clunkers" came along, they stopped discounting the cars’ retail price and instead sold them at the full list price of $15,500.  So, you paid $3,000 more than you would have the month before...  (Honda, Toyota , and Kia played the same list price game that Ford and Chevy did).

So let's do the final tally here:

You traded in a car worth:   $3,500

You got a discount of:   $4,500

---------
Net so far:    +$1,000

But you have to pay:  $1,350 in taxes on the $4,500 (if in the 30% tax Bracket).
      
---------
Net so far:     -$350

And you paid:   $3,000 more than the car was selling for the month before         
                     
---------- 
  
Net   -$3,350 loss

We could also add in the additional taxes (sales tax, state tax, etc.) on the extra $3,000 that you paid for the car, along with the 5 years of interest on the car loan, but let's just stop here.

So who actually made out on the deal?  

* The feds collected taxes on the car along with your increased income tax on the $4,500 they "gave" you.  

* The car dealers made an extra $3,000 or more on every car they sold along with the kickbacks from the manufacturers and the loan companies.  

 

* The manufacturers got to dump lots of cars they could not give away the month before. 

And the poor, stupid consumer. . ..   got saddled with even more debt that 
they cannot afford.  

Obama and his band of merry men convinced Joe consumer that he was getting $4,500 in "free" money from the "government" when in fact, Joe was giving away his $3,500 car and paying an additional $3,350 for the privilege..

Think this was stupid for those who were crazy enough to swallow this wonderful scheme?

Just wait until we get health care with no additional costs over what most of us now pay for health insurance and the best medical care in the world.  Think that scheme might be designed by the same people who came up with Cash for Clunkers?

Despite Republican criticism concerning record federal deficits, Obama said the U.S. has had to "spend our way out of this recession" with so many people out of work but insisted he was still mindful of a need to confront soaring deficits. More than 7 million Americans have lost their jobs since the recession began two years ago, and the jobless rate stands at 10 percent, statistics Obama called "staggering."(perhaps Mr. Obama should read our article "Checkbook 101" to get a little bit of an idea of fiscal responsibility.....it shouldn't be any different on a governmental level as it is on a personal level. There is no way, now shape, no form, that ANYONE CAN SPEND THEMSELVES OUT OF DEBT!.....)

TIDBITS:
The US standard railroad gauge (distance between the rails) is 4 feet 8.5 inches. That’s an exceedingly odd number.
Why was that gauge used?

Because that’s the way they built them in England, and the US railroads were built by English expatriates.
Why did the English build them like that?
Because the first rail lines were built by the same people who built the pre-railroad tramways, and that’s the gauge they used.
Why did ‘they’ use that gauge then?
Because the people who built the tramways used the same jigs and tools that they used for building wagons, which used that wheel spacing.
Okay! Why did the wagons have that particular odd wheel spacing?
Well, if they tried to use any other spacing the wagon wheels would break on some of the old, long distance roads in England, because that’s the spacing of the wheel ruts.
So who built those old rutted roads? The first long distance roads in Europe (and England) were built by Imperial Rome for their legions. The roads have been used ever since.
And the ruts?
The initial ruts, which everyone else had to match for fear of destroying their wagon wheels and wagons, were first made by Roman war chariots.
Since the chariots were made for, or by Imperial Rome, they were all alike in the matter of wheel spacing. Thus, we have the answer to the original question. The United States standard railroad gauge of 4 feet, 8.5 inches derives from the original specification for an Imperial Roman war chariot.
Specifications and bureaucracies live forever.
So the next time you are handed a specification and wonder what horse’s rear end came up with it, you may be exactly right-because the Imperial Roman war chariots were made just wide enough to accommodate the back ends of two war horses.
Now the twist to the story… There’s an interesting extension to the story about railroad gauges and horses’ behinds. When we see a Space Shuttle sitting on its launch pad, there are two big booster rockets attached to the sides of the main fuel tank. These are solid rocket boosters, or SRBs. The SRBs are made by Thiokol at their factory at Utah. The engineers who designed the SRBs might have preferred to make them a bit fatter, but the SRBs had to be shipped by train from the factory to the launch site. The railroad line from the factory had to run through a tunnel in the mountains. The SRBs had to fit through that tunnel. The tunnel is slightly wider than the railroad track, and the railroad track is about as wide as two horses behinds.

So, the major design feature of what is arguably the world’s most advanced transportation system was determined by the width of a couple of horses’ asses.

Yes, both the Missouri Dept. of Health and the state Attorney General (Chris Koster) have decided that prosecuting a farm family for illegally "trafficking" raw milk should be at the top of their list of priorities. The family being targeted by state officials is the Bechard family, of Armand and Teddi Bechard, and their children Joseph, Hananiah, Kazia and Katie.

IRS pounces (It's called 'entrapment....why 'your' govt determines you can't live on what you say you are living on and thus must be lying to them...and harrasses you) Rachel Porcaro knows she's hardly rich. When you're a single mom making 10 bucks an hour, you don't need government experts to tell you how broke you are. But that's what happened. The government not only told Porcaro she was poor. They said she was too poor to make it in Seattle. It all started a year ago, when Porcaro, a 32-year-old mom with two boys, was summoned to the Seattle office of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). She had been flagged for an audit. She couldn't believe it. She made $18,992 the previous year cutting hair at Supercuts. A few hundred of that she spent to have her taxes prepared by H&R Block.

"I asked the IRS lady straight upfront — 'I don't have anything, why are you auditing me?' " Porcaro recalled. "I said, 'Why me, when I don't own a home, a business, a car?' "

The answer stunned both Porcaro and the private tax specialist her dad had gotten to help her.

"They showed us a spreadsheet of incomes in the Seattle area," says Dante Driver, an accountant at Seattle's G.A. Michael and Co. "The auditor said, 'You made eighteen thousand, and our data show a family of three needs at least thirty-six thousand to get by in Seattle."

"They thought she must have unreported income. That she was hiding something. Basically they were auditing her for not making enough money."

SEIU Union Boss to Boy Scout: How Dare You Serve Your Community!

There's nothing new about forced-dues-hungry union bosses complaining about how volunteers and nonprofits don't pay union dues, but this is a new low:

Last week at a city council meeting in Allentown, Pa., a top official of the local Service Employees International Union chapter ranted about 17-year-old Scout Kevin Anderson's park cleanup work. Anderson devoted some 200 hours to the job in order to earn an Eagle Scout badge. He picked up trash and helped clear a 1,000-foot walking path with fellow members of Boy Scouts Troop 301 of Center Valley.

But SEIU's Nick Balzano gave them hell instead of thanks.

Balzano disparaged altruistic efforts in city parks and asserted that "there is (sic) to be no volunteers" since his union members were laid off. He then issued a witch hunt threat: "We'll also be looking into the Cub Scout or Boy Scout who did the trails. We may file another grievance on that." Citing union rules, he gave the Allentown city council, the Boy Scouts and all potential volunteers an iron-fisted ultimatum: "None of them can pick up a hoe. They can't pick up a shovel. They can't plant a flower. They can't clear a bicycle path. They can't do anything. Our people do that."

Twilight 'Zona: Tennis Seniors Arrested Here we go again. How many stories like this are we going to get? Stories of senseless tennis violence. And what do you get when this happens?
Ray Moore and George Morell know. Moore was wrestled to the ground by a cop, a knee in his back while he was cuffed, apparently bleeding. Both were arrested, and spent the bulk of the day in jail.(by the way, they are in their 80's) The offense? Have I forgotten to mention that part? Morell is 85 and Moore 82. They were playing tennis at their club in the Sun City West, Ariz. retirement community, where they have been members for years. Morell, apparently, didn't show his membership card before taking the court.

When asked for it, he produced a photocopy, not the original.

That was the offense. From there, an argument is understandable, but somehow it got all the way to the club calling police, and the officers throwing them in jail after a ruckus.

.............Oh yeah....hardened criminals these two!...thats easy to see....we ask one more time ....who in hell is training these cops?????...who is letting them get away with this insanity....don't they have real criminals to chase ...and how come they are WASTING THE TAX PAYERS MONEY...(hint, these two probably are taxpayers).....and time....???
