SHOCKING REVELATION: U.S. POWS STILL IN LAOS There is new evidence that American GIs are being held against their will in Southeast Asia more than three decades after the Vietnam War officially ended. A letter recently received by the father of a U.S. pilot, who went missing in action in 1971, could provide a key piece of information that proves American prisoners of war are alive and imprisoned in remote areas of South Vietnam. Over the years, historians, researchers and independent journalists have made a compelling case that, during the Cold War, thousands of U.S. POWs were moved among Soviet, Chinese and North Korean labor camps, where they toiled and died under the worst conditions.Over the years, he says, presumptive Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) have both undermined efforts to help Americans who are still being held against their will. McCain and Kerry have both weighed in against offering reward money for the release of U.S. citizens who may still be in captivity in Laos, Vietnam, China and North Korea, said Milliner.
Home-grown veg ruined by toxic fertiliser: Gardeners across Britain are reaping a bitter harvest of rotten potatoes, withered salads and deformed tomatoes after an industrial herbicide tainted their soil. Caroline Davies reports on how the food chain became contaminated and talks to the angry allotment owners whose plots have been destroyed. Aminopyralid, which is found in several Dow products, the most popular being Forefront, a herbicide, is not licensed to be used on food crops and carries a label warning farmers using it not to sell manure that might contain residue to gardeners.

Bomb Iran? What's to Stop Us? Unlike the attack on Iraq five years ago, to deal with Iran there need be no massing of troops. And, with the propaganda buildup already well under way, there need be little, if any, forewarning before shock and awe and pox – in the form of air and missile attacks – begin. This time it will be largely the Air Force’s show, punctuated by missile and air strikes by the Navy. Israeli-American agreement has now been reached at the highest level; the armed forces planners, plotters and pilots are working out the details.Emerging from a 90-minute White House meeting with President George W. Bush on June 4, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert said the two leaders were of one mind:

President Bush said he will sign both pieces of legislation when they reach his desk

The Authoritarian State In Place So calm is Italy that when the neo-Fascist Defense Minister announced his decision to send army troops to patrol city streets, most people shrugged, more absorbed by the European Soccer Cup and making a living than the devastation of political-social Italy. People act as if what is happening here were happening in another country or on another continent. Not in Italia. Only isolated skeptics here and there, like the marginalized Left opposition, ask ironically when the first curfew will be posted. And, one might add, how long before martial law arrives?

Can You Pass The Israel-Palestine Quiz? The Israel-Palestine conflict resonates deeply with many people. Opinions are sharply divided and generally unchangeable. However, as a member of a mainstream Israeli peace group, I often encounter opinionated people who are ignorant of many basic facts. And, while much concerning the conflict remains disputed, there are important, undisputed facts which must underlie any coherent opinion.
Home To Too Many Widows BAQUBA, Jun 18 (IPS) - Just about everyone in Iraq is a loser as a result of the occupation, but none more than women. One of the more obvious signs of that is the very large number of widows. The Asharq al-Awsat Arab media channel estimated in late 2007 there were 2.3 million widows in Iraq. These include widows from the 1980-1988 war with Iran in which half a million men were killed, the U.S.-led invasion and occupation of Iraq, and from 'natural' causes. The news outlet cited the Iraqiyat (Iraqi women) group as a source for their figure.

The justices handed the Bush regime its third setback at the high court since 2004 over its treatment of prisoners who are being held indefinitely and without charges at the U.S. naval base in Cuba. The vote was 5-4, with the court's liberal justices in the majority.

Evil in America.....Assisted-living facility tries to evict 99-year-old woman on Medicaid (some background here, not substantiated yet) A little over 4 years ago Extendicare ( a canadian, long term care, company basing its US operations out of wisconsin)bought up assisted livings all over the US and named thier subsidiary company 'Assisted Living Concepts' They put thier favorite cthulhu spawn "XXXXXXX" in charge. This woman is everything dirty about American corporations in general and healthcare in specific. She has been giving orders to systematically evict very old people from ALC buildings for the last two years. Last year she gave eviction notices to over a dozen medicaid residents in Olympia , 2 weeks before christmas. (the administrator of the building was so horrified she quit). She's doing it all over the US......in between evictions she lets the press die down and then begins again. All in the name of profit. This woman and her company are a cancer in this country and she is the best argument,by far, for nationalised healthcare. The link provided tells only a very part of this ugly, ugly tale.....and doesnt address the nation wide impact of ALC or thier history. But in a nutshell...they are evicting a 99 year old woman who has lived in the building for a decade and just now ran out of money and has to go on medicaid. They wiped out her life savings and now they dont want her anymore. Extendicare posts another profit gain. (Under the Wire). Extendicare Homes To Pay $2.3 M In Largest State Settlement Over Nursing Home Violations Is Extendicare here to help the elderly, or to help 'themselves'? Input on both sides welcome.
