3/20/10 Strong quake hits off Papua New Guinea: geologists PORT MORESBY (AFP) – A strong 6.2 magnitude quake struck off Papua New Guinea's coast on Saturday, US geologists said, but there was no tsunami warning and the epicentre's depth lessened the likelihood of damage. The quake struck at 1400 GMT with its epicentre located 95 kilometres (60 miles) north of the town of Rabaul on New Britain island and at a depth of 423 kilometres, the United States Geological Survey said. There was no immediate alert from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre, based in Hawaii.
3/8/10 Deadly 6.0 Quake Rattles Turkey (Newser) – At least 51 people were killed early today when a 6.0 magnitude earthquake rocked eastern Turkey. Minarets toppled, buildings crumbled, and panicked residents fled their homes in 6 villages near the epicenter some 350 miles east of the nation's capital of Ankara. Rescuers were rushing to free people trapped in the rubble, reports the BBC. "The number of people injured is not clear. Ambulances keep on going back and forth," said a local governor. 3/7/10 Link (interesting pictures, although in Spanish): www.sernageomin.cl/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=493&Itemid=1 3/5/10 3/4/10 Taiwan, Japan, Chile, Haiti still experiencing more quakes and after-shocks! 3/2/10 2/27/10 Special page on Chile Quake and Tsunami watches and warnings.. fly in Sakura-jima eruption
Here’s some serious volcanic lightning. As reported
in this week’s SI/USGS
Weekly Volcanic Activity Report, Sakura-jima volcano
in southern Japan –always
highly-active – erupted spectacularly on
8 February, producing lava fountaining up to
1 km in height, showering its flanks with incandescent
material, and throwing up a very dense ash plume positively pulsating with
lightning. There’s a great
video at Kago-net showing
all this activity, and I can’t resist showcasing
some captures from that video here. (There has been some
interesting research on volcanic
lightning recently, occasioned by Redoubt’s

Almost a year after the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai
eruption, where an undersea volcano sprang forth from the
deep - quite spectacularly, we have new footage of another
undersea eruption. Fukutoku-Okanoba,
off the coast of Minami Iwo, started
to erupt yesterday (or, at least, erupt enough to
manifest a plume out of the ocean). A Japanese coast guard
vessel was able to
capture the plume on video as it reached 100 m /
~300 feet. The plume appears to be dominated
by white steam along with some grey ash mixed in. Additional
footage shows the water stained brown/tan with ash and volcanic
debris from the eruption as well. ..the rest of the story

Activity
increasing at Tungurahua in Ecuador
It hasn't really made it to much of the English-speaking
news, but the current eruptive activity at Tungurahua appears
to be on the up-tick. Hugo Yepes of the Geophysical Institute
of Ecuador suggests that a
larger eruption is not out of the question (link

to explosions (vulcanian?) and ash fall around the region,
specifically on Pillates and Choglontus overnight (2/1) from
the ~ 2 km / 5 000 foot plume. Looking
at the specifics (link in spanish), the
Geophysical Institute is reporting 32 explosions, 30 long-period
seismic events and 20 episodes of volcanic tremor in the
last 24 hours. Government officials have issued a number
of warnings for people living near the volcano and began
preparation for evacuations. You can listen

2/4/10 2/1/10 Hundreds of Quakes Are Rattling Yellowstone
In the last two weeks, more than 100 mostly tiny
earthquakes a day, on average, have rattled a remote area
ofYellowstone

monitor the park’s strange and volatile geology on
alert. Researchers say that for now, the earthquake
cluster, or swarm — the second-largest ever recorded
in the park — is more a cause for curiosity than
alarm. The quake zone, about 10 miles northwest of the Old
Faithful geyser, has shown little indication, they
said, of building toward a larger event, like
a volcanic eruption of the type that last ravaged the Yellowstone
region tens of thousands of years ago. ..the rest of

Volcano-like
eruptions in Arunachal
ITANAGAR: In a very rare phenomenon on Indian
soil, volcano-like eruptions have triggered large-scale forest
fires that are threatening vast tracts of forest
in Arunachal Pradesh. There is no official
word on these "eruptions" that have occurred
in the last few days in the Dehu Mountain range
in Kurung Kumey district.
Sources from the remote area said a forest fire
has broken out at nearby Langa Tata Mountain situated
in between Yangte and Chambang. Arunachal West
MP Takam Sanjay has requested CM Dorjee Khandu
to seek help from the Geological Survey of India,
Department of Mines and Minerals and Forests to
investigate into the phenomenon. In August 2007,
similar eruptions had disturbed residents near Kimin
in Lower Subansiri district, in which coal-like substances
were detected after the remains had cooled down. While
scientists from GSI and the Arunachal government's geology
and mining department collected evidence, they
didn't confirm presence of lava.
Local authorities claimed the fires then were caused
by electric short-circuit that generated enough
heat to
melt stones around a 200sq metre area. ..the rest

Lava pond visible at Kilauea volcano summit, again November
22, 2009 - Hawaii Volcanoes National Park East Africa's Great Rift Valley: A Complex Rift System
Part I. The East African Rift SystemThe East African Rift System (EARS) is one the geologic wonders of the world, a place where the earth's tectonic forces are presently trying to create new plates by splitting apart old ones. In simple terms, a rift can be thought of as a fracture in the earth's surface that widens over time, or more technically, as an elongate basin bounded by opposed steeply dipping normal faults. Geologists are still debating exactly how rifting comes about, but the process is so well displayed in East Africa (Ethiopia-Kenya-Uganda-Tanzania) that geologists have attached a name to the new plate-to-be; the Nubian Plate makes up most of Africa, while the smaller plate that is pulling away has been named the Somalian Plate (Figure 1). These two plates are moving away form each other and also away from the Arabian plate to the north. The point where these three plates meet in the Afar region of Ethiopia forms what is called a triple-junction. However, all the rifting in East Africa is not confined to the Horn of Africa; there is a lot of rifting activity further south as well, extending into Kenya and Tanzania and Great Lakes region of Africa. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the general geology of these rifts are and highlight the geologic processes involved in their formation. the rest of the story at the link... 11/16/09 4.6 earthquake hits in San Bernardino County The temblor struck east of Ridgecrest and north of Barstow at about 1:20 p.m. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. The earthquake was centered near Searles Valley, about 117 miles from downtown Los Angeles. It's the latest of several quakes to hit the region in the last day.Earlier this morning, a magnitude 3.6 earthquake hit Riverside County east of Temecula. Millions of tonnes of dust, ash and sulphur dioxide were thrown up to 30 miles into the air when Sarychev Peak on Matua Island in the Kuril Archipelago erupted last month. The blast created what experts call a ‘volcanic aerosol’ - a colourful mixture of ash and sulphur compounds - in the stratosphere. This scatters an invisible blue glow which, when mixed with the red light of the setting sun, produces a ‘volcanic lavender’, or vivid crimson/violet hue. ..the rest of the story at the link 7/9/09 5.0 earthquake off the coast of Oregon ALASKA: 'Uplift' baffles scientists, transforms area beach Like a giant fist punching through the earth, a 1,000-foot long section of the beach below Bluff Point rose up 20 feet from the tidelands sometime last Friday or late Thursday, pushing boulders up from the ocean bottom, cracking sandstone slabs and toppling rocks upside down. ..the rest of the story at the link More than 300 injured by strong quake in China A moderate earthquake rocked southwest China Thursday evening, injuring at least 336 people and collapsing 10,000 homes, state media said. Amazing volcano photo shows shock wave ..the rest of the story at the link An amazing new picture from space reveals
a volcanic eruption in its earliest stage, with
a huge plume of ash and steam billowing skyward
and creating a shock wave in the atmosphere.
Sarychev Peak on Matua Island is one of the most active volcanoes
in the Kuril Island chain, northeast of Japan.
The new photo was taken June 12 from the International Space
Station. NASA says volcano researchers are excited about the
picture "because it captures several phenomena that occur
during the earliest stages of an explosive volcanic eruption."
The main plume appears to be a combination of brown ash and
white steam, according to a NASA statement. The vigorously rising
plume gives the steam a bubble-like appearance.
The surrounding atmosphere has been shoved up by the shock
wave of the eruption, scientists said.
Volcano plumes are so chaotic that they produce lightning,
as revealed in pictures for the first time earlier this year.
The smooth white cloud on top may be water condensation that
resulted from rapid rising and cooling of the air mass above
the ash column. This cloud is probably a transient feature,
scientists say, with the eruption plume is starting to punch
through. The cloud casts a dark shadow to the northwest of the
island.
Often, winds high in the atmosphere sheer a volcano's plume
and flatten it out. That didn't happen with this one.
Giant volcano smoldering under the sea of Santorini The under-water volcano Columbus, situated 6,5 meters south-east of Santorini in the Aegean sea, is being observed with great interest by Greek and German scientists. The have registered constant earthquakes of 4 Richter, hot air eruptions and continuous changes in the sea floor around the crater. The volcano is 470 meters high and reaches down to 17 meters beneath the sea floor. Its crater’s width is out of proportion- 1.5 kilometers. Complex submarine equipment has shown that Columbus’s volcanic activity never stops. It is the reason for the frequent earthquakes and constant changes in the surface around the crater. ..the rest of the story at the link Supervolcano may be brewing beneath Mount St Helens IS A supervolcano brewing beneath Mount St Helens?
